On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court passed down its decision in the Roe v. Wade case. In the 38 years since then, pre-born children have been slaughtered in America, and, for the most part, we Christians have just let it happen. Sure, there has been “outrage”, but if we really cared as much as we say we do, we wouldn’t rest until abortion is eradicated. We must work tirelessly to convince our fellow citizens that this has to stop. What will it take?
You’ve probably heard the statistics, but in case you haven’t, here are just a few that ought to open our eyes:
- 3,700 unborn children will die in the U.S. today
- Over 1.2 million babies have been killed in America each year since 1973
- 43% of ALL American women under the age of 45 have had at least one abortion
- In many metropolitan areas, nearly as many babies are aborted as are born
As terrifying as these statistics are, it’s obvious they are not enough. These statistics have been around a long time, but it hasn’t made any difference. What will it take?
We need to be confronted with the horror of abortion. We need to see it face-to-face, so that we no longer have an excuse for apathy.
In years past, Americans have been spurred to action by stirring photographs of atrocities taking place around the world. During Hitler’s holocaust, Pol Pot’s killing fields, the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur, and many other instances, pictures have served as a dramatic wake-up call to a sleeping nation.
It’s time to wake-up to the reality of abortion.
That is why groups such as Life Project USA and Abort73 are getting the message through the hard way. They are making use of graphic images, depicting the grim truth of abortion “carefully, but without fear”. These images are very hard to see, but they should be. Our stomachs should turn when we see human bodies — made in God’s image — mutilated and thrown away.
These images and videos are not for the eyes of children. I urge you to use discernment when choosing to follow these links. Be warned: You WILL be affected when viewing this material. But I do hope that many of you will take some time to watch, reflect on what you see, and take action. If you are an abortion proponent, then I would especially hope you would view it with an open mind and a contrite heart.
This first link is to the trailer for a soon-to-be-released documentary called LIFE, produced by Life Project. I am especially saddened by the interviews. How deceived are the vast majority of our neighbors (even many within the church)! However, we must be careful how we respond. As Nancy Pearcey says in her new book Saving Leonardo, “Christians should speak out on moral issues not because they feel ‘offended’ or because their ‘cherished beliefs’ are threatened, but because they have compassion for those who are trapped by destructive ideas”.
This video is produced by Abort73:
Wake up, Church. Tomorrow is “Sanctity of Life Sunday”. If abortion is mentioned in your church service (as it will be in ours), and it stirs your passions, don’t let your zeal fade. Do something. Even if it is only to pass on what you have seen and heard. The world is full of people who need to know that God loves them, and that He loves their unborn children.
They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” ~ Revelation 6:10
