Combing the Net – 8/11/2011

The blog has a  bit of a new look today… let me know what you think!

Dramatic Rescue at Sea — Incredible story about a boy swept out to sea during his youth group’s trip to the beach. He was resuscitated after being “dead” for more than 20 minutes, and now appears to be recovering with no permanent brain damage!

London in Flames — I appreciated this perspective on the rioting that has taken place this week in and around London, England.

The Bible says that London last night is a visceral illustration of what the world is actually like, controlled by “the ruler of the kingdom of the air – the spirit that is at work in those who are disobedient”. When God removes his restraining hand, that is the natural inclination of every heart. Not just the disaffected youth or a tiny minority hell-bent on criminality. Everyone.”

Manliness Doesn’t Just Happen — This is a really excellent article about the importance of cultivating masculinity. The author is not talking about the shallow machismo that most people associate with the word “masculine”, nor is he referring to choosing one’s “gender identity”. Instead, he encourages (in this post as well as the “Art of Manliness” blog in general) men to devote themselves to discerning what it really means to be “a real man”, and to think about what goals and values will lead to that end.

If you believe that being a man means living a life of virtue and excellence and reaching your full potential, then that won’t happen without a great deal of both study and effort.

Preparing to Be an Amazing Old Man or Woman — Few things are more of a blessing to me than spending time with a truly amazing older man.  I want to be that type of old man someday! Here are some great practical things that younger people can be doing now to prepare us for that role in the future.

Something tells me Steven Seagal has spent his time cultivating things other than wisdom…

    Your links aren’t working…

Used to be the heading titles were in bold, and when you hover over them with the mouse, they would show an underline. Now I just see bold titles, but they don’t show the underline or the link address in the footer. I’m not able to click through. The links on the right sidebar still work.

I don’t know if it might be some of the security settings in my laptop. I use IE 7.0, and it’s my work laptop, which is tightened down so much by our info security department, that it might be something on my side too. I’ll try with a different PC if I can get around to it. Don’t hold your breathe…

By the way, Thanks so much for your blog. I really enjoy your book reviews and quick links / references.
